The studio actually sat him down and explained how he should expect an immediate backlash based on "Previous Experience". Great interview, and as I have said many times before, my initial instinct was positive and I think he was a great choice. 10 years ago I would have been the first one to sign that petition to get rid of him. Now that I have seen "Argo", "The Town", and many other recent films of his, I believe this was a wise choice. If you think "Daredevil" proves he cant pull this off, watch his recent work.
