The subject of Christianity has and will always be a touchy subject to Native Americans. Christianity is directly responsible for the greatest tragedy and injustice ever to be inflicted on one group of People. The first Europeans to arrive on the American continent saw the Native and Indigenous People as barbaric and savages and their Spirituality as Paganism. The Europeans arrived brandishing crosses and swords, murdering and raping millions and millions of Native and Indigenous men, women and children all in the name of religion . As with any culture that has ever conquered a group of people and forced their religion onto those they conquered, the failure of many typical white Americans to even TRY to understand how deeply rooted our spiritual values are continues to this day. Native American spirituality is profound and deeply rooted into our cultures and our every day way of life. We believe EVERYTHING is sacred, from the largest mountain to the smallest plant and animal. A lesson can be found in all things and experiences and everything has a purpose. To sum up Native Spirituality, its about HONOR, LOVE, and RESPECT. Not only do we Love, Honor, and Respect our Mother Earth, but also every living thing. It is about being in touch with ourselves and everything around us. It is about knowing and understanding that we are part of everything, and everything is a part of us. We are all One. We also believe that our Elders hold the answers. Our Elders keep our cultures and spirituality alive. We have much to learn from our Elders, and they deserve and receive our utmost respect.
