The subject of charitable contributions is not directly a local - TopicsExpress

The subject of charitable contributions is not directly a local political issue. However, many organizations that request tax support also depend on contributions to operate and to reduce the amount of tax support. Our local United Way is a major source of contributions. However, it is having difficulty meeting its contribution goals. It has missed its $2 million goal for the second year in a row. Less than 5% of local people give to the United Way. United Way officials have compared our communitys giving with similarly sized ones across Florida and the Southeast, and the bottom line is Marion County performs worse than almost any of them. Some examples of other 2012 United Way campaign totals: Bradenton, $2.5 million; Pensacola, $3.1 million; Naples, $2.2 million; Columbus, Georgia, $7.8 million; Spartanburg, South Carolina, $4.6 million; and Winston-Salem, North Carolina, $16.6 million. The local leadership of the United Way is attempting to revitalize charitable giving. Its ambitious goal is to raise $6.7 million over the next three years to be targeted to education, health and income initiatives. Why do you think United Way is having such difficulty meeting its annual goals and what do you think it could do to improve local charitable giving?
