The summer is upon us,and it is important to take precautions against mosquitoes. As such, the Suffolk County Department of Health Serviced has set up a West Nile Hotline to help detect and prevent the spread of West Nile Virus. Since mosquitoes can contract the virus from infected birds, and pass it along to humans via a bite, it is especially important to report any dead birds that you may come across. To report a dead bird sighting, please call the Department of Health Services Public Health Hotline at 631-787-2200. The hotline will be open until Labor Day, and will be answering calls Monday through Friday between the hours of 9am and 4pm. Take the first step in preventing the spread of West Nile by eliminating stagnant water sources around your home. Mosquitoes can not breed without access to a water source. • Dispose of any water-holding containers on your property. • Remove all discarded tires on the property. • Make sure roof gutters are clean and in working order. • Turn over plastic wading pools and wheelbarrows when not in use. • Change the water in birdbaths. • Clean vegetation and debris from the edges of ponds and keep shrubs and grass trimmed. • Clean and chlorinate swimming pools, outdoor saunas and hot tubs. • Drain water from pool covers.
