The sweet little coastal town of Rota in the province of Cádiz is famous in the area because they have been able throughout the years, to harvest their tomatoes, green peppers and pumpkins in May, one month earlier than the surrounding towns. This is because the cultivating land in Rota is divided into small, family run plots (featuring a small house and some fruit trees too). Every family takes extremely good care of their small crops achieving amazing quality and earlier harvests. This type of local agriculture structured in small family run plots is called Mayetería and the local land workers are called Mayetos. Lucky roteños are the first to enjoy their tomatoes preparing a very typical, fresh and tasty local dish called Arranque in which tomatoes, peppers, garlic, bread, salt and olive oil are mashed up together until they all mix in a delicious puree which is a common meal in homes from May till the end of the summer.
