The teachers’ strike has entered its fourth week and there is no sign that it will end soon. It is, therefore, upon the President to act fast to salvage the situation. There is no need blaming politics on this.Teachers are rightfully demanding the implementation of their 1997 pay deal with the government. The excuse that the government is still young is too lame. It is the leadership that is young and not government; it has been there since 1963. Any leadership that assumes office always shoulders the debts of the previous regime, however big they are. That is why the current UK government paid our Mau Mau veterans for the brutality meted on them by their ancestors. Have you ever asked yourself why parents are quiet on this issue? It is because they are on the teachers’ side and if you don’t act fast, the strike is soon going to be a crisis. The teachers only need a little backup from learners and their parents for it to become a major strike. Most of us are linked to teachers in one way or the other — either as learners, parents or guardians. This just shows how the teachers’ strike involves all of us.
