Average descent time: 3 hours The team will start their ascent around 1am to reach the crater rim by sunrise. The steep climb over loose volcanic scree has some well graded zig-zag and a slow, but steady pace will take them to Stella Point in about 6 or 7 hours. They will rest there for a short while to enjoy the sunrise over Mawenzi. They will walk along the crater rim to the summit passing spectacular glaciers and ice cliffs that still occupy most of the summit area. THEN THEY SUMMIT THE HIGHEST PEAK IN AFRICA! The descent to Bafaru is surprisingly fast and after some refreshment they will continue to descend until they reach their final campsite at the edge of the Mweka Forest.
