The temperature has dropped, but your activity levels dont have to! Studies show that people who exercise regularly were less likely to develop serious eye disease. Whether youre headed outside for a walk or to the gym, follow these tips to keep you safe while staying active this winter, compliments of Jewish Family Service - Cincinnati. -Footwear- Wearing the right type of shoe can save you from a devastating fall. Try to wear rubber or neoprene soled shoes with plenty of tread to provide better traction. Comfort shoes, worn by many seniors, have smooth soles and should be avoided when possible. -Use caution when getting in and out of the car: Many falls occur at this time. When you are about to get in or out of the car make sure your footing is clear before moving. - Use floor mats: When entering a building, be sure you wipe your shoes on the floor mat to remove moisture to prevent slipping. - Decrease your risk of falling: Danger can be reduced by wearing boots with non-skid soles and making sure steps and sidewalks are clear of snow and ice. If using a cane, be sure to replace the rubber tip. -Drive safely: Driving in the winter can be dangerous but there are a few things you can do to help stay safe. Make sure to winterize your car, take a charged cell phone in case of an emergency, make sure to have an emergency kit in your car at all times, and do not drive on icy or unfamiliar roads.
