The term sentient being is defined as any being that possesses the state of consciousness, which in more simpler terms means any living thing. In Buddhism we are taught that humans are connected to all other sentient beings in our desire to live lives free from suffering and pain. We are instructed to not only respect all life but to honor and Love it in the same way that we Love, honor and respect ourselves. All living creatures have their place and their purpose in our ecosystem existing in balance and harmony with each other and nature. They are lead by their natural instincts to reproduce in order to keep the cycle flowing, they are not corrupted by greed or by ego to try and manipulate or control one another. I wish I could say the same for human beings. As a race we have allowed our insatiable greed and our ever growing ego to see ourselves as the self appointed tyrannical rulers of this planet. We view all other sentient beings not as equal parts of our ecology, but as possessions and objects that we can do with what we choose. We hunt these animals for sport and enjoyment, we capture and imprison them so that we can study them. We put them in circuses and theme parks forcing them to perform tricks for our entertainment, all the while mistreating them and robbing them of their rights to live out their lives the way nature intended them to. We allow our egos to convince us that by doing these heinous things, we are protecting many of the species from extinction. But what we refuse to see is that no species of animal on this planet would be in danger of extinction if it were not for the hand of man. We as a race must finally learn that we are NOT as important to this world as we think we are. This planet not only existed but flourished long before we arrived. We must find our place back in this ecology and start to live in peace and harmony with all other sentient beings. We must learn to start listening to our animal brothers and sisters and using our voices to speak out in their behalf. Blessings and Love to you all.~ GURU BUBBA McLOVIN
