The theme for my art comes from the eternal question, “Who are we as human beings in the universe?” To find an answer, I have traveled, communicated with various people, and learned from a diverse range of studies. In the end, I arrived at a most simple and clear answer; that is, every human is born, lives, and dies. This truth will be expressed in my project, “Cosmic Portrait”. “Cosmic Portrait” is a portrait of humans in the universe. Figures will be painted in the style of Realism. The background behind each figure will resemble a nebula in the universe. A nebula is formless, similar to an abstract painting. Nebulae are composed of debris from dead stars and provide the space where new stars are born. Therefore, humans, the part of star named earth, were also born of a nebula and will eventually return that form. Each figure in “Cosmic Portrait” will be in the process of creation and extinction at same time. He or she will appear to be both forming and disappearing in many star-like particles. Particles represent cosmic atoms and energy. Humans are born by gathering these elements and will be scattered as such after death. In my painting, formation means birth, life, and being, while disappearance signifies death and non-being. While two different processes—creation and extinction— act in the universe, each human is born, lives, and dies like every other. To express this fact, I will paint portraits of people from various races, genders, and age groups. Although each person has individuality, all humans originate from the same universe and ultimately will return there. This destiny is the universality that we all share. Through “Cosmic Portrait”, I want to contemplate both the individuality and universality of humans. “Cosmic Portrait” explores our presence in the universe. Images will combine macrocosms and microcosms, macroscopic beings and microscopic beings, the infinite and the finite. I want to show a strong bond between humans and the universe through my piece and portray an understanding and love of both.
