The thing I miss most in this culture of fear, hatemongering, disenfranchisement, diminished personal rights and freedom is the absence of satire on TV. Satire has always played a big part in our culture and it has disappeared. I guess our current governments actions provide much too much material and satire tends to throw a spotlight on stark political stupidity. Its a shame that we have been robbed of this small pleasure - small source of comfort and humour at a time when people need to laugh - more than ever. And dont say there is plenty of satire on the internet or paytv - like people who have lost their job or had payments cut can afford that. Soaring unemployment, cuts everywhere, food banks turning people away, mental health problems through stress and anxiety soaring, homelessness rising... yeah right now we need a laugh I am an artist and am aware of this absence of satire in the same way I would notice if blue went missing. I am also aware of quiet yet significant stories that have unfolded such as the recent cancelation then reinstatement of the Leunig calendar - not to mention the laws making it illegal for journalists to report on illegal government actions - 2 examples of the same thing at different ends of the spectrum. If you think Im just carrying on then go stick your head back in the sand. I hope you suffocate. Year 1 over - 2 more to go and well be losing more than just satire. A lot of people are still in shock because so much has happened so quickly - its a dirty tactic but has obviously worked as a pacifier of sorts.
