The thing that most troubles me about the CH is it/isnt it racist argument is not any sort of complex argument about the nature of French satire. Ive been reading them. Some of my friends have been posting little else, and I read a lot. Even though I think some of the best ones in defense of CH boil down to You anglophones just dont get *real* satire like us. (which is obnoxious), what really troubles me would be something I would notice even if the volume were off on all the arguments themselves. It is that with only a few exceptions, overwhelmingly people of color are saying, Yes, this is racist. And that overwhelmingly (again, with a few exceptions) only white people are suggesting that it is not. The divide becomes especially poignant when you examine the French societys dominant and marginalized voices. My social justice 101 says thats a racial issue. And that all that complex Cant you take a joke/you dont get French satire stuff is just Intercontinental Whitesplaining. If I decide WHEN to listen to POC about what is racism and when to ignore them, Im basically saying I know more than they do about what racism is and how it manifests.
