The thing to remember about playing drums (or more specifically, - TopicsExpress

The thing to remember about playing drums (or more specifically, becoming good at something involving drumming) is that you dont necessarily need to sit down with a snare or a practice pad and just do rudiments and marching patterns. Those obviously are the building blocks to becoming a competent player, and every drummer worth the money they put into it needs to know them, but doing just rudiments and whatnot takes a lot of the fun out of playing. Sometimes you just need to sit down with a song or group of songs and just play them. In my case, I learned how to play metal from Slayer, how to use odd times and accents from Dream Theater and Rush, and how to play (see: fake my way through) jazz (fusion) from Opeth. Ive picked up the rudiments through those avenues, but never have I dedicated like an hour to just doing rudiment patterns out of a book. Not to say Im not any good at it, as Id like to think I am (Im not marching level good at them, but that was never one of my goals in drumming), but really every drummer, even the most stringent teacher type in the world, needs to just sit down with some songs and play to them every so often, because playing music is where the fun in drumming comes from.
