The third spot of my trip to Alaska -Skagway is located in a narrow glaciated valley at the head of the Taiya Inlet, the north end of the Lynn Canal, which is the most northern fjord on the Inside Passage on the south coast of Alaska. It is in the Alaska panhandle 90 miles northwest of Juneau, Alaskas capital city. No matter where you go in Skagway, youll feel like you are stepping back in time. Beginning in 1897, Skagway and the nearby ghost town of Dyea was the starting place for more than 40,000 gold-rush stampeders. Population: 800 people. The White Pass & Yukon Route Railroad is International Historic Civil Engineering Landmark, an honor shared with the Eiffel Tower, and the Statue Liberty. We took 2 hours the historic White Pass & Yukon Route railroad tour to the top of the mountain pass north of town. Seated in parlor cars, we ride up the most spectacular part of the trip viewing scenery. As we reached White Pass Summit, we saw this border marker and the flags of the United States and Canada. Elevation : 2,865 ft. Because the terrain here is so rugged, the customs checkpoint for the US and Canada is located in nearby Fraser, British Columbia. We got out of train and continued our trip to Canada by a small bus, it was six of us and a lady driver. The Northern British Columbia region encompasses more than half of the province, and holds major populations of wildlife including bears, moose, deer and mountain goats. We stopped by a several Lakes. The most beautiful like I ever see - Emerald Lake is a lake in the southern Yukon, notable for its intense green color. It is located on the South Klondike Highway at 73.5 mile measured from Skagway, Alaska. The color derives from light reflecting off white deposits of marl, a mixture of clay and calcium carbonate, at the bottom of the shallow waters. The high concentration of calcium carbonate in the water here comes from limestone gravels eroded from the nearby mountains and deposited here 14,000 years ago by the glaciers of the last ice age. Glacial erosion was likewise responsible for scooping out the shallow lakebed. We stop by Carcross, originally known as Caribou Crossing is an unincorporated community in Yukon, Canada, on Bennett Lake and Nares Lake. It is home to the Carcross/Tagish First Nation. At the 2011 census it had a population of 200 people. We had a lunch there at a local cafe. It was a really good meal. After, we stop by Carcross Desert, Yukon is often considered the smallest desert in the world. The Carcross Desert measures approximately 1 square mile. I would never expect to see this in this trip. The 6 hours trip was like one week. We passed the border of Alaska and came back to Grant Princess.
