The thoroughness of RSPCA South Australia leaves nothing wanting. This is from Andrea of said organisation in response to my concern about a picture of a dog that is kept in a cage at a Smiths Holden Adelaide Hi Alan, Thank you for contacting RSPCA South Australia to report your concerns regarding a dog which is living at a Port Adelaide car dealership. After receiving multiple reports to our cruelty line and via our Facebook page, I personally attended the Commercial Road property to check on the condition of a large cross bred dog who is currently being used to guard the premises. It was reported to us the dog was being kept in a cage all day, smelling of urine, lacking stimulation, exercise and clean bedding. When I attended, the kennel facility was clean and neatly presented. Further, the kennel has ample shelter and contrary to some photos which are circling online, the kennel area is bigger than many used by sheltering organisations. The dog had two large buckets of water, food and clean bedding. I found him to be in excellent physical condition. I have also been told the dog spends approximately 12 hours a day roaming through the yard, generally at night. When I attended, the dog was being kept in conditions which were compliant with the South Australian Animal Welfare Act. I would like you to know RSPCA Australia as a matter of policy is opposed to the use of any animal for the purpose of work where this may cause injury, suffering or distress to the animal. This includes using dogs for guard duties. However it should be noted that this activity is not illegal.
