The ticks are out in force, and they are as small as poppy seeds. Tick bites often create intense itch and ooze serum; it can look like pine sap. Check your horses mane and tail, under his chin, in the armpits and up inside the flanks, areas that are favored for bites. Apply repellent such as Frontline, Equi-spot or permethrin fly spray. The best way to detect ticks is to feel your horse all over every day, and investigate any areas that are not smooth. Some tick bites are like volcanoes; they have a hole in the center that discharges serum and bloody goo. Sometimes there is swelling surrounding the bites. Be sure you check yourself for ticks as well, and if you have any headaches, fevers, or achiness see a doctor promptly.
