The time warp war bunker underneath Armley. The dark storm clouds of war gathered in 1938. Like many other Northern cities, Leeds prepared for the worst. The recreation grounds across the city were dug up, and public air raid shelters were constructed underneath them. After the war the shelters were simply sealed up and forgotten about, but many of these time capsules still survive to this day. Many of the recreation grounds in Leeds still have these buried shelters. Wortley, Beeston Cross Flats Park, East End Park, and Roundhay are a few examples. The idea was to construct the shelters near to many houses, but just far enough away of any potential bomb damage. Once in a blue moon these old air raid shelters are accidentally broken into by workmen, or part of the shelter collapses. Its in this very narrow window of opportunity that you can get to take a look inside them. Within days the shelters are sealed up again, and no one will see them again for another 20-30 years. Prepare to enter the underworld of forgotten Armley. **See all the comments below for the full story**
