The times I realized my brother was a man and no longer my baby - TopicsExpress

The times I realized my brother was a man and no longer my baby bruh: -When he first gave me advice on how not to be afraid of my own success and light. -When he got me a computer cuz I needed to write. -When he got his own candy hustle in our neighborhood and was always looking for entrepreneurship opportunities. -When he mentored the young boys on the block and the young men in our family. -When we went bike riding together for the first time ever in Central Park and we realized nowhere in our childhood were we ever the same age to bike ride together. -When he spent his spring break building houses for Katrina victims in the Gulf Coast (I had used my spring break to take a trip to the Bahamas with my girls. Way to show me up brotha.) -Every time Im around him lately and he takes care of people and his community. I realize my brother and I were both raised by humanitarians (even if they dont call themselves that). I realize my brother is the best of my parents, and a better man than I am a woman. His heart - the size of the Atlantic ocean. His soul - deep. I realize that he is flesh and bone and able to be wounded. He is lion and wolf and able to fight back. He is a man. Black man. Haitian man. Human man. Honest man. Giving man. Loving man. Evolving man. Intelligent man. And still sometimes, when its not too embarrassing or inconvenient, I like to remember him as my baby brother - who was born fast asleep and has been the most chill dude Ive known ever since. Happy birthday kid whos not-such-a-kid anymore. Im sorry I tortured you when we were kids, and Im glad were now homies and youre man enough to survive it all.
