The town is in Opposition Leader Danielle Smith’s riding. In an emotional news conference, she expressed frustration at the flow of information to her and to residents from the Tory government. “We have to get the communication flow going,” she said. “Otherwise, we’re going to end up not only having the town destroyed, but the town community spirit destroyed.””There was a major, I think, communication error that was made in pitting one member of the community against the other. They chose to demonize the resident(s) who choose to stay back in town,” she told a news conference. She said authorities are demonizing residents who chose to remain in town. Smith stayed back with the pet rescue effort in town, while others were helping their neighbours, she said. “To try to depict them as somehow defiant and harming their neighbours has created vitriol on the website like you wouldn’t believe. People who are threatening, or asking the police to go in and Taser the residents to remove them — it’s outrageous what’s being said. And that’s got to stop.”
