The trend of voters’ inclination in recent by-poll of three - TopicsExpress

The trend of voters’ inclination in recent by-poll of three assembly constituencies of Assam has been disappointing for the committed grass-root level workers of the Congress party and leaves one pondering over the strategy that went wrong. Going against the national mood the voters of Silchar elected the Congress candidate their representative in Loksabha extending overwhelming support but the trend in Silchar and Lakhipur (despite winning) assembly segments under the same Loksabha constituency is a categorical pointer of the fact that the State leadership both in PCC and in the Govt. have been totally directionless in framing strategy and failed to keep the traditional support base intact and consolidated. It is worth mentioning that the Lakhipur Constituency has been a Congress bastion continuously for last thirty-one years and the party should have performed even better. By blaming the so called “infighting” within one cannot evade responsibility for the poor show of the party. All these, in my opinion, resulted from defiantly ignoring the burning issues raised by disgruntled MLAs and attempting to dump them calling ‘dissidents’. The situation in Jamunamukh LAC also portrays a grim picture for the party where it could not mobilize popular opinion in its favour despite dismal performance of the erstwhile AIUDF MLA and diluted its own position by fielding a not-too-strong candidate. It is high time for the leadership of the party to read the clear writings on the wall and to give deserving weightage to the opinions of even marginal workers & supporters who nowadays cannot be taken granted by imposing unworthy candidates upon them. Govt. machineries need to be geared up immediately to reach people in every possible way to regain the lost ground which, if neglected now, may cost the party pretty dear in next Assembly Election.
