The trip to Singapore last week included two nights on the vessel Superstar Gemini to the Berjaya Resort on Palau Tioman, Malaysia. A total of 1400 passengers boarded, Indian nationals traveling on their independence celebration numbered 600. They have a travel now pay later plan, up to 5, even 10 years to pay. Naturally, the ships food offering had to match this groups vegetarian and spice needs which the Filipino chefs handled well. The difficulty was with their use of the hand to pick up and/or touch the food on display so I would hear the staff repeatedly say: Use the tongs, please. 40% of the vessels crew are Filipinos hired thru Magsaysay placement/shipping agency. From singers/entertainers, chefs, waiters, engineers and lots more, a few of them on their 1st 10 or 11 month contract but some having done at least a dozen contracts after a month or two at home base. A guy from Agdao; ladies from Buhangin and Mintal; Tagum; Sta. Cruz; Cebu; Bacolod, and many more places. Forty-five hours on board a vessel; eat all you can on all meals; two dominant nationalities that compete at being the number one in call centers.
