The trouble with Westerners who praise superficial aspects of an Islamic society that opposes secular liberal democracy, in this Iraqi Kurdistan: It is a society that rejects religious zealotry. Most Kurds are Sunni Muslim and one can hear the five-times-a-day Muslim call to prayer, but it is muted and ignored by most. Like Israel, Kurdistan is more democratic than any of its neighbors. Like Israel, Kurdistan is surrounded by enemies that wish it did not exist. Like Israel, Kurdistan looks West. And like Israel, Kurdistan has maintained an internal equilibrium though all the world betrays it. So the Sunni Kurds are our friends, right? They will stand with us against Islamist jihadism, right? Unfortunately, that is wrong. Sunni Kurds are looking for friends right now, but when the chips are down, they will support other Sunnis, not Israel and not the West. Here is why: Kurdistan draft constitution, 2008: Article 6: This Constitution confirms and respects the Islamic identity of the majority of the people of Iraqi Kurdistan. It considers the principles of Islamic Sharia as one of the main sources of legislation.
