The true driving force of the instinct to survive has been misunderstood. It is a conscious expression of desire to preserve the body, but an unconscious expression of the longing for union, part of the same creative energy that is not seeking anything else except the breaking down of boundaries. If survival fulfills its natural role rather than being exaggerated by the work of the ego, then it is only preserving what is for the sake of expansion, not stagnation. Even if you leave the question of consciousness completely aside and only look at this from the perspective of the physical - it is the survival of the body which has allowed the possibility of its own evolution.
