The true story chronicling the three-month period in 1965, when Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. led a dangerous campaign to secure equal voting right, culminating in a historic march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama was undoubtedly one of the most significant victories for the civil rights movement. Director Ava DuVernays SELMA tells this story in passionate and powerfully cinematic ways and is clearly a director that will be getting many offers to be helming other major projects to the big screen from here on out. Aiding to the success of DuVernays confident direction is a solid and heartfelt performance by David Oyelowo (best known previously as playing Forest Whitakers wayward son in LEE DANIELS THE BUTLER from 2013) as MLK Jr., and this will be the role that will serve as the launching pad for him as well to more A-list opportunities as an actor. Both Tom Wilkinson (as LBJ) and Oprah Winfrey (as an older supporter of MLK Jr.) provide first-rate supporting performances as well. Worthy of its Best Picture and Best Song Oscar nominations, SELMA is understandably on many Top Ten lists for the year, and is a film that The Hawk feels should be shown to every single middle school and high school student in our country. Grade = A
