The trust was established by deed dated 11 March 2014 to honour the memory of Basil Flashman who died on 5 March 2014. Basil was a supreme educationalist and as teacher, headmaster, school governor and educational consultant transformed young lives. Basil’s memory is commemorated by the opportunity to all through the trust to continue, in the spirit of his many gifts, to help children and young people in education. The trust deed has been established following the precise form recommended for small charities by the UK Charity Commission. A copy of the deed is available upon request from the chairman. The trust will register with the Charity Commission as soon as the annual income moves above £5,000, being the minimum l¬¬¬¬evel below which we may not register. The trust will also register with HMRC so as to enable the charity and donors to take advantage of gift aid tax refunds from HMRC. All donors will be entitled, upon request, to become members of the charity and, as such, to receive accounts, to attend and vote at general meetings of the charity and to appoint trustees. The trust will be a purely educational charity and will have as an initial strategic focus the education of children and young people who would otherwise receive no education. As an example; Basil and Margaret’s generosity in recent years has enabled children in Uganda to attend school such as Joseph and Saida pictured below. Basil’s grand daughters Alessana and Katia have spent several summers working with homeless children in Africa. They have the “Basil genes”, energy and skill that will make them brilliant trustees. We are also very fortunate to have as our fourth trustee Mrs Jo Newman, head of the Junior School at North London Collegiate School and friend of Basil. The trustees will be meeting three times a year. We will meet in the Easter School holidays to assess progress and to set objectives for the next term. A report of that meeting will be available to members. The trustees will conduct due diligence on all proposals for funding and follow up on the pupils and projects to monitor and report upon results. Where possible overheads will be kept to the bare minimum and reported on in the annual accounts.
