The truth is that we will never be free from this spirit ourselves or extend biblical compassion to those in its shadow until we address poverty from a biblical point of view. The spirit of poverty derives directly from the breaking of covenant, from the disobedience of the church concerning the principles of God. We are not doing what God ordained—we have failed to care for the poor and left the job to the secular state. Our sin has created a void in the spirit realm. The adversary has been only too willing to fill that void with alternatives or consequences that have brought spiritual slavery to millions and enhanced his own dark kingdom. Just as Adam’s original sin brought a curse on all mankind, so have the church’s sins of commission and omission over the centuries brought multiplied pain and misery to mankind. Now it is up to us to repent and follow in the footsteps of our Redeemer to bring restoration, healing, and redemption to society through the gospel.
