The two great American documents are the Declaration of Independence, and the US constitution. The Constitution is considered a model in the art of compromise. Compromise is, of course, a word that is not used anymore. Anyway, when our founders got together in Philadelphia in 1787, it was very hot and humid. The founders were dressed appropriate for such an occasion but, the humidity had gotten so high that some clothing would have to be removed if any work was to get done. In any case some of our founders began to take off their jackets and roll up their sleeves. There were arguments as to how far they could go. Finally, in the spirit of compromise, they decided that they would take a vote and then write it into the US Constitution. The vote decided that the jacket could be removed and sleeves could be rolled up. Hence, the 2nd amendment: The right of the people to bare arms shall not be infringed.
