The two main styles of the Columbia Grand Opera labels, a series announced early in 1903 and the first extensive series of opera recordings made in America (Bettinis cylinders, also recorded in New York, were in very limited production). The label was initially red, but Victor sued, claiming that they had prior claims on the color, and Columbia switched to the standard black and silver. (Victors European affiliate, the Gramophone & Typewriter Company, had used a red label for their operatic discs, and Victor began issuing them in America in March 1903, using imported masters.) The Columbia series was quickly overshadowed by the Victor Red Seals.
