The two studies, one published in Environmental Health Perspectives by researchers at UC Davis and the other in Pediatrics from UCLA, both continue to examine how environmental conditions and experiences can play a role in raising the risk factor for autism. Researchers from the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health found that the incidence of autism in children could increase if their mothers experienced stress or psychiatric disorders while escaping wars, disasters or famine. Among Latino, Asian and African-American populations, where such risk factors are high, autism is under reported and needs to be identified earlier, researchers found.
