The typical working day in New York City’s large mercantile establishments is 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., with 30 to 45 minutes for lunch Monday through Saturday, though in some stores employees work later on Saturdays, often until 9 or 10 p.m. In one of the small stores surveyed, the hours were 8 a.m. through 9 p.m. Monday through Friday, and until 11 p.m. or midnight on Saturdays with some employees working 8 a.m. until noon on Sundays, though they receive extra compensation for their Sunday work.
