The unconscious for Jung, then, came first. It was primary. Consciousness was something that arose out of unconsciousness. Biologically, this is a fact, both in terms of the history of the race and the history of the individual. The childs body and its functioning and all the implications of that body are fashioned in the mothers womb. The child isnt rationalizing about this; it is born with a lot of impulses it never decided to have. When these are pushed back or frustrated or thrown off the line, discombobulations occur which then have to be corrected. And from where does the correction come? It comes from the body impulse. So Jung postulated the existence of what he called a collective unconscious, and he interpreted the mythological imagery in a patients dreams, not be asking, What does this remind you of? but by looking around to see what the symbol has meant forever in myths: a technique he called amplification through comparative mythological studies.
