The unprecedented expansion of university art education through - TopicsExpress

The unprecedented expansion of university art education through the 1960’s and 70’s is long past. Many programs have been left with an infrastructure and a culture that is the legacy of those years of rapid growth. Part of that legacy was the dominance of the traditional studio disciplines. For a university art department to survive and prosper they must adapt to a rapidly changing environment. Part of the change requires rethinking previous assumptions and even what may seem to be personnel standards of excellence. This paradigm has reversed. It is the traditional areas, painting, sculpture, ceramics, printmaking, photography that now serve the graphic design area. Once this shift in thinking is fully embraced I believe an art program can thrive. It is not to say that the traditions of the other areas, skill based perceptual drawing, wheel thrown pots, wet photography, various printmaking techniques or oil painting are not still viable. I am saying that the vitality of those forms are now exist in a partner relationship to technology and an astute faculty will embrace that relationship.
