The upcoming 60th anniversary of Community Living Owen Sound and District has given us an opportunity to reflect on how this organization came to be. At the time in our history when this organization was forming, the commonly held expectation was that people with developmental needs would be placed in an institution to live. 60 years ago, a small group of family members from this community decided that their loved ones deserved to live in their own community with their family, friends and neighbours. The values that would have led to that decision still hold true today. The importance of family, community, opportunity, dignity, worth and respect aren’t recent buzzwords that we use. They are the values that were held and lived by that small group of pioneers that worked hard to create something better. We will be posting some important stories each day over the next several weeks. Some of these stories are historical – some are more current. Most promise to get us all thinking and chatting about how far we have come.
