The upcoming weather forecast for our area shows the first extreme and extended cold snap of the season. MEWS wants all of our customers to be prepared and remain safe during the cold weather. Now is the time to get prepared for the winter weather that we will have to endure in the coming months before a long awaited spring. As a result of the impending forecast Mayfield Electric & Water Systems’ will work to set as low of a peak demand on our TVA Power Bill as possible for the month of November. MEWS will implement the in house steps listed in our Peak Reduction/Energy Management Program. MEWS will make these efforts in order to conserve electricity, reduce demand, prevent potential waste, and create savings. MEWS plans to lead by example and reduce energy consumption and coincidental peak at all MEWS facilities. MEWS will shift the water distribution plant’s coincident peak kW by operating a diesel generator during the forecasted peak and utilize water storage by shutting off the service pumps at the million-gallon water tank. Reducing horsepower will reduce kW at the facility, 1HP=. 75kW. At the MEWS’ waste water treatment facility we will monitor the plant and only run blowers, digesters, and motors that are necessary to keep plant in compliance during the forecasted peak time. We will take steps at all MEWS’ facilities such as lowering the thermostat a few degrees, turning off lighting in unoccupied areas, and if it is sunny opening blinds to allow the sun to assist in heating our buildings. November is a transitional month, however, the unusually cold temperatures indicate a potential costly spike in demand and MEWS wants to do our part to prevent it. During this type of weather event the electric heat will be the main contributor to our demand. MEWS is forecasting that the spike will occur during the hours of 8am to 11am, potentially November 13, 14, 17, or 18. These days are the coldest and with a north wind contributing will create some chilly mornings for Mayfield residents.
