The urban vs. rural (pagan to maintain the old Roman correspondence) population (in % of total population) of Canada over time ... 1851 - Urban 13%, Rural 87% 1901 - Urban 37%, Rural 63% 1951 - Urban 62%, Rural 38% 2001 - Urban 80%, Rural 20% According to Stats Canada, in 1931 (Urban 54%, Rural 46%) ... when the farm population count was compiled for the first time, 3,289,140 people were living on a farm-31.7% of the Canadian population. By 2006, the farm population accounted for only 2.2% of all Canadians. Hence most of the rural population in 1931 was actually a farming population, whereas these days the farming population of a given a rural community is a minority within the rural community; keeping in mind of course that this is a theoretical statistically averaged model and not a real world sample, where some rural communites ARE *farming* communities while others are not. As of 2006 2.2% of Canadians were food producers; living close to nature in a very meaningful way ... provided of course you consider *eating* to be meaningful or not. What does that mean in a democracy?
