The usual De Giorgio :) Back in the Netherlands from Spain, at home, among the animals living with us. Very satisfied for these days of dialogue, discussion and future in the scientific context of the applied ethology of ISAE, also thinking how to put on the table other big questions about animal ethics in the next meetings. Now let me tell you a very funny episode happened yesterday at the last session of posters. I saw a poster about interaction with animals. So I gone there to investigate better and a young colleague, one of the authors of the poster, she began to exhibit and explain it to me, coming to the training topic :). Then, I make to her a question like: But you still applies models of operant conditioning? and she responds with a puzzled look: Yes, during animal training, and starts to look at me in a strange way, because that my still she dont known where to place it in her mind, the expression of her eyes expressed at the same time resistence and curiosity, discomfort and desire to understand, rigidity and openness to new scenarios of knowledge. Then I say, to remove her from the embarrassment: My fields of study are animal learning, minds and ethics, also in the interaction with human animals, for that I dont prefer to use models of operant conditioning. I cordially greet her, thanking for exposing her poster and I walk away, with the certainty of having created a small earthquake in her mind. :)
