The verdict is in from the Supreme Court. Isolsated human genes - TopicsExpress

The verdict is in from the Supreme Court. Isolsated human genes cannot be patented. If you were in my genetics class this spring you may remember us talking about the bioethics of patenting human genes (like the BRAC1/2 gene which test for breast cancer susceptibility). Because of the ruling the price of the BRAC1/2 test (currently priced by Myriad at $3000) could go down due to other companies now being able to give the test. The supreme court ruled "“A naturally occurring DNA segment is a product of nature and not patent eligible merely because it has been isolated,” he said. “It is undisputed that Myriad did not create or alter any of the genetic information encoded in the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes.”" mobile.nytimes/2013/06/14/us/supreme-court-rules-human-genes-may-not-be-patented.html
