The very first time MADONNA ever entered my consciousness was on a hot day at Delaware Park in Buffalo, NY. There we were sitting near the lake enjoying the day when a jalopy car in the distance comes barreling down the street toward our area of the park, sputtering and making all kinds of clanking noises. Over it all, you can faintly hear some little kids singing along to the radio., to a song I had never heard before. The loud jalopy comes to a stop at a parking spot near us and with a loud bang, clang, crash, snap, crackle and pop, the car engine stops, and like a scene from a movie smoke billows from the front of the car. But…the radio stayed on and the three little kids in the back seat continued singing at the top of their lungs, very happily: “We all need a holidaaaaaaaaay!” They did not have a care in the world nor cared that they were in what looked like a death mobile. It was funny and awesome because I thought then and there how cool it was that whatever that song was, whomever was singing made those kids so damn happy! I’ll always remember that. And because the kids were African-American, I stupidly assumed the singer was African-American, too. LOL It’s still hard to imagine a time when I had no idea yet who was Ma-freakin’-donna! But, the second time I ever heard her, later that fall, changed everything…
