The very talented actors who wasted those talents in David O Russells AMERICAN HUSTLE, his messy and nonsensical follow up to the equally acclaimed but infinitely better Silver Linings Playbook are, in alphabetical order, as follows: Amy Adams, Christian Bale, Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence and Jeremy Renner. Its no wonder to me now that this film came up goose eggs at the Academy Awards, despite 10 nominations with 4 in the acting categories. The Golden Globes considered this film a comedy, but the only truly hilarious thing about the film was Mr. Renners hairpiece. And the movies boldest statement came from its costume designer, who outfitted Ms. Adams character in dresses whose neckline plunged to her waist. Okay, so it was set in the 70s, a decade which I apparently must have missed. But the based on a true story premise of a monomaniacal FBI agent (Mr. Cooper) whose major contribution to law enforcement, and apparently lifelong goal, was to somehow entrap a New Jersey Mayor into accepting a bribe was exceedingly overwrought. Ms. Adams and Ms. Lawrence approached their roles with some earnestness, but I thought Messrs. Bale, Cooper and Renner were just going through the proverbial motions. Oh, Louis C. K. had a small role, like he had in Blue Jasmine. A bewildering film from Mr. Russell, who was just not able to hit the right notes, the counterpoint between drama and comedy. Well, at least there was a disco scene! Enjoy the movies. Next up for me in catching up with the Oscars: GRAVITY, which Im dreading. I hope Im proven wrong. ROCK ON!
