The walls came crashing down. He didnt want them to. Hed built them up for years, stone upon tear, upon angry word, mortared by pain and loss, fashioned by his own hands and built to withstand the siege engines of love. In that one moment, when hed first seen her, when hed saved her from the beast on the floor of the Florentine church, when shed put the end of the silenced .22 caliber pistol to his forehead and hed seen the flexing of her finger, he knew. And now, with the hordes arrayed around them, salivating at their love and knowing the danger she was in he let the walls fall. That she did too didnt make it any easier. That she was forsaking her lifes road, giving herself to him, only made it sweeter. To the accompaniment of the whispered sighs of a thousand watchers he walked over the wreck of his walls and embraced her. The smoothness of the sheets and her skin shrouded the sureness of the pain to come...for just this perfect moment. In the distance, across the desert, a man, a thing, danced beside a fire, three wraiths spinning in evil circles around him. The man smiled at the moon, raged at the stars, cried like a newborn baby.
