The war on Christians: City forced to surrender praying soldier statue under atheist attack! How can someone be so offended by a being they don’t believe exists? Leaders in the town of King, N.C., were forced to remove a statue of a soldier kneeling at a cross from a local park because ONE person was offended by the display. (That’s right, ONE.) According to the lawsuit filed by Americans United for Separation of Church and State on the complainer’s behalf, the offended citizen was Steven Hewett, who “served his country in Afghanistan, where he received both the Combat Action Badge and the Bronze Star.” “The decision to settle this case has been very difficult for the King City Council. It was not reached until it became clear that the costs of proceeding to trial would greatly exceed the City’s insurance policy limits,” the city said in a news release. “The city’s litigation costs and fees were estimated to approach $2 Million without any assurance of a successful outcome.” This decision was the culmination of a two-year legal battle between Hewett and the city of King. The city acquiesced to an earlier demand to remove a Christian flag from the display in 2010 but, until this settlement, refused to move the statue. According the news release, King had already spent $50,000 in legal fees. “While the Council did not wish to settle the case, the financial implications to the city were such that it was not reasonable or responsible to burden the city’s taxpayers with tax increases to fund a defense to Mr. Hewett’s lawsuit,” the city said. The bullies at Americans United for Separation of Church and State said they were happy with the city’s decision. “Protracted and costly litigation in this case was in no one’s interest,” a statement on the group’s website read. If they are so offended by all religions, what is their next target? Chances are, it won’t be Islam.
