The way that situation escalates is really shocking if you watch the video. I know so many people gone say what the wife and this guy should have done, but if you are civilian who never got a gun pulled out on you, you wouldnt understand how fear is a very rational reaction. A couple years ago, my LB Jordan Jackson and I was flyering cars for a party with in this parking lot during another party. A cop sees us, walks up and says he got reports of someone trying to break into cars...mind you, its not that late, and plenty of people were coming in and out the party all night, anyone breaking into cars would either be an complete idiot or a professional. The cop asks us what we are doing and to show him whats in our hands. I cant remember what my LB did, but mine were in my pocket, and i was holding the flyers and they were black. Im like, theres no way Im going to pull out any black object too fast around any cop. Theres more than enough instances of Black dudes pulling out cell phones, and getting shot 20 times. I tell him that Im going to pull my hands out slowly. He pulls out his gun, shines his flashlight in my eyes, points his gun directly at my head and yells show me your hands now! After I slowly pull out the flyers, he asked again what are yall doin, and my LB tells him we just flyering. He says .......oh and pretty much just walks away. In this situation, if a cop pulled a gun out on me cuz I looked for a ticket in the back of my car, of course I would be afraid to move. Not to mention my family is in there. But I definitely think I woulda told the officer like Im scared because you have a gun out. Im going to unlock the door, but please open the door yourself so you can see clearly that I have no weapon so that i can get out as slow as possible. Because if this man assumes that a Black man (even in a car with his wife and two kids on the way to see his wifes dying mother) is a potential threat, any wrong move could make this story end way differently. At this point, I dont care about arguing whether or not this dude or the cop in my exeperience is a racist, and I sure aint tryna be a dead talking point in a debate about post-raciality and why him killing me wasnt about race. I move too fast, you shoot me. I trip gettin outta the car, it startles you, and you empty the clip. Just one of the reasons why Im an ULTRA defensive driver, and whenever I get stopped by police, I announce damn near everything. chicago.cbslocal/2014/10/07/hammond-family-sues-police-for-excessive-force-during-traffic-stop/
