The way to Bella Bella from Port Hardy BC, Canada Behind me is a old grave site. A little ways before this point I found an old trail they still use today and I walked into it and come up on an old grave site. I sang songs and asked for forgiveness (I felt really bad). When I returned to the village in Bella Bella, I sat with an elder from there and told him of my trail hike from the farrie dock along the shore back to Bella Bella. Right away he looks at me and asks did you come across an old grave site?, I said yes and I said that I was sorry for that and turned around and walked back out. He said dont worry about it we still go through there a lot and use it to get cedar bark for our dressings. I told him I seen where they get it. He goes on telling me the story of the grave sites and why they are there. Sad to here stories like this. He goes on saying: When we first encountered the white man they brought an illness and called it smallpox and it killed a lot of our people. That is where we barried the older ones. The the he points out to the bay, to an Island, and says see that Island that is where they barried all the babies that parrished from the smallpox. A tear rolls down him cheek and as well as mine as I listen to his stories of the Bella Bellas past. Ill stop there! But yeah he tells me more old stories of the village.
