The way you get your script to the right people is that you put it - TopicsExpress

The way you get your script to the right people is that you put it in an envelope. Its easy. The difficult bit is writing something that is so good people will take a punt on a brand new writer. - Steven Moffat One of the messages we preach all of the time here in Songtown is that THE secret - the ONLY real secret to getting a song cut is to write a song that is SOOOO good that people drop what they are doing because they cannot do anything other than listen to that amazing song. There really is no substitute. There are staff writers writing every day that are writing great songs. Writing songs as good as them wont likely get you noticed. That is kind of like an artist coming along that is just like Taylor Swift. We already have one of those. We dont need another one. My advice to 99% of the aspiring writers I work with is to stop spending so much time trying to figure out how to get their songs to the right people and to spend more time writing. Writing a better song is going to get you much farther than getting to know the right person. Ive had more than 90 cuts, but knowing the right people and having a track record doesnt help me get anything but my very best songs recorded. No one does me a favor. They cant afford to do me a favor. Their career and they job are on the line. I have to deliver one of the top 10 songs in town or I dont make the record. If you write a monster hit song, I promise you that people will notice. Clay and I will be passing your song along to people that can get it cut. Other industry professionals will be fighting over it. You cant keep a great song down. It will eventually get heard by the right people. The truth of the matter is, if people arent jumping up and down over your songs yet, then you need to write better songs. The same goes for me and Clay. If Kenny Chesney doesnt record one of my songs for this record, I try to write better songs for him next time. I dont spend time trying to get to know his manager or the people around him. I try to write a better song for him next time. The good news is - you CAN become a better writer. You can educate yourself and improve your writing skills. You can explore different co-writing relationships to see what works best for you. Thats why we spend most of our time here trying to help you write better. Because thats the secret sauce. If they arent noticing you yet, stop mailing off those scripts and write several more better than the ones youve been sending before you try that again. Write on! Marty Dodson
