Pithy Point: To capitalize or not to capitalize When writing titles like mother/father, capitalize the title ONLY if it is taking the place of a name. Wrong: I went to town with mother. Right: I went to town with Mother. (Her name could be used instead of Mother.) Wrong: I went to town with my Mother. Right: I went to town with my mother. (Replacing mother with a name would sound ridiculous: I went to town with my Louise.) Do not capitalize a title after a possessive unless the title is a part of the name. Example: I went to town with my Aunt Susie.
