The weather and lighting continue to be a real drag since I am - TopicsExpress

The weather and lighting continue to be a real drag since I am itching to have some nice conditions so I can really dig into the 7D Mark II. Nevertheless, as photographers we need to find a way to handle less than ideal conditions. I would say this Snowy Owl was better than 80 yards away. There was a lot of mist in the air and it was hunkered low to the ground. It took some playing around with metering and compensation settings to contend with the situation. This was a perfect situation to move from AI Servo into One Shot. It was also a good time to move from my normal metering approach of Center Weighted Average and switch to Spot Metering. I mention these adjustments as a way to encourage other to learn more about the settings on your camera so you can adjust to conditions. I know all too well how it can be easy to stay in your comfort zone. Canon 7D Mark II Canon EF 600mm f/4 L IS USM + EF 1.4x Converter (840mm) ISO 320 f/8 1/250th Spot Metering Exposure Compensation: 1 1/13 Supported by a XL Large Bean Bag ( The Vest Guy) Even though today was rainy and overcast, with the owl being so white there was a fair amount of time spent trying to get the metering right. Metering for Whites & Lights is the approach I am practicing more and more. What I mean - meter for the whites and lights in a way so they are exposed well while you do not let your shadow areas get too dark. To help me I keep the Highlight Alert enabled on my camera. I also watch closely to see how the detail is showing up in those white and light areas. As awesome as Camera RAW is, if your whites and lights are blown out the details are lost. At the same time I am careful not to let my dark areas get too dark. Still, when it all said and done, I would rather deal with some areas that are slight dark over losing all the detail in the white and light areas of my subject. Oh...the final thought. Glad to see the Snowy Owls back in the area. Welcome Back Squinty - © Scott Denny 2014
