The weather system that is the cause of our weather is currently traveling N to NE at 30mph over Emmons and Sioux counties. We are possibly going to get some of this weather, according to the National Weather Service office here in Bismarck. Continue to monitor the weather via tv and radio. In the event a tornado warning is initiated some helpful tips are below. If you are needing or feel safer waiting out the warning in one of the buildings on campus with a basement or safe sheltering area, we can make that accommodation by opening those buildings. Below are some contact numbers for the Security on call and also, a number for the emergency contact for the Safety Director. WHAT TO DO... Student Family Housing: Avoid windows. Get in the basement and under some kind of sturdy protection (heavy table or work bench), or cover yourself with a mattress or sleeping bag.. Head protection, such as a helmet, can offer some protection al-so. Student Family House with no basement, a dorm, or an apartment: Avoid windows. Go to the lowest floor, small center room (like a bathroom or closet), under a stairwell, or in an interior hallway with no windows. Crouch as low as possible to the floor, facing down; and cover your head with your hands. A bath tub may offer a shell of partial protection. Even in an interior room, you should cover yourself with some sort of thick padding (mattress, blankets, etc.), to protect against falling debris in case the roof and ceiling fail. A helmet can offer some protection against head injury. Wellness Center, Jack Barden Center, Student & Campus Services Building, Admissions/Financial Aid Building, Administration Building, Education Building, Skill Center & Science & Tech Building: Go directly to an enclosed, windowless area in the center of the building -- away from glass and on the lowest floor possible. Then, crouch down and cover your head. Stay off the elevators; you could be trapped in them if the power is lost. Gymnasium and Multi-Purpose Room: Proceed to the basement area of the gymnasium area on the NW side. Signage will direct you to the basement sheltering areas. Theodore Jameson Elementary School: Follow the drill! Proceed to the Bunker (Safe Area) near the Property and Supply Building. If you are in a building with a basement (FACE Program), proceed to the lowest level of the building away from windows. Follow the in-structions of TJES school administrators. TJES has a plan in place, so do not attempt to pick up your children. Wait until an all clear is given, before you attempt to pick up your kids. Shopping in Bismarck/Mandan in the Mall or Large Store: Do not panic. Watch for others. Move as quickly as possible to an interior bathroom, storage room or other small enclosed area, away from windows.
