The web is full of reports of Greystone mercenaries operating in Ukraine. Russia Times and India Times have both reported their presence, and an array of blogs and alternate media have reported it. All these reports seem based on a video showing masked and armed men who could be from anywhere. None of the major media, with the exception of The Telegraph in Britain, have reported the presence of mercenaries. But the problem is this: the major media are creatures of oligarchs who profit from war. In a sense, for all their seeming gravitas and technological wizardry, they are as unreliable as the biased reports filling the web; they just wear better masks and have more bought-and-paid-for respectability. So at the end of the day it’s difficult for the public to know which report challenging the authorized version might be authentic. What is the authorized version? Well, Russia and the West, all ruled by oligarchs, claim an ideological struggle is underway. But the question is, Is it? Or are we watching an elaborate con the purpose of which is to make money, exploit unrest, and get more people killed so that banks and arms makers can profit? I think one conclusion is inarguable: we’re watching failed leaders distract us from the ever-widening chasm between billionaire oligarchs and the rest of the world.
