The whole object of a wise man is not to react exactly as his - TopicsExpress

The whole object of a wise man is not to react exactly as his opponents act; not to go so far in one direction as the other man has gone in the other.... Chesterton is wrong here. Mussolini and Hitler were not only not reactionaries, they werent even conservatives. That they obtained many of the desiderata of the reaction/ conservative crowd is just as misleading as the fact that they pioneered so much of what we would associate with liberals and or hippies: anti-vivisection laws, regulations on hunting, organic farming, anti-smoking laws, vacations and easy term loans for workers, the determination to culturally integrate the worker into national life, the concern with the preservation of rural life and small agriculture, the reforms on money and the jackboot on the neck of Capital, etc. Part of understanding what they were trying to do (Mosley advocated very similar ideals) allows us to end the long nightmare of Right and Left, the ugliest and worst and longest live breakdown product of the French Revolution. Without Mussolini and Hitler, Im sure obese windbag Catholic Triumphalists would have put the Soviet Union to rout with their cane swords and mustaches and fob watches, no doubt. I think the Germans should have let the Reds take Spain. The resulting rapes and massacres of priests and nuns, the destruction of churches, the systemic de-religionization of the population. All this might have lit a fire under the ponderously huge ass of G.K. Chesterton. He might have made a quip that would have done irredeemable harm to the self-esteem of the Red Army soldier that would have dragged him off to a labor camp where he would have lived for about a week. His pince nez would have been redistributed to the poor, I should think. How sad that we live in a world where the Hitlers and the Germans die so that the infinite self-satisfaction of the morally lard-assed Christer can complain about his salvation for years. SIEG ODER BOLSCHEWISMUS. Chesterton would never consciously admit to being on the side of Bolshewismus, but when it came down to it, all the heroes of the Right opted for this: Spengler, both Lewises, Tolkien, Chesterton, Lovecraft, et al. Resisting Bolschewismus would require, you know, actual resistance - even at a moral level. None of them were up to the task. Tolkien wrote about Frodo. Hitler *was* Frodo. Like Milton, who was at liberty when he wrote of the Devil, Tolkien was free when he wrote of Sauron, for he was of Saurons party where and when it really counted. He should be remembered as a profoundly ambivalent figure. He and Lewis had a big fuss about how Hitler had besmirched Tolkiens literary legacy simply by existing. Pure Northerness was now in a bad odor because of Hitler - not because of British Propaganda or war crimes trials or the years of press demonization that led to WWII but because of the beastly Hun. Why Lewis and Tolkiens nations is being drowned in Muslims and Africans, why its economy has been totally financialized . . . all of this is left as an exercise for the Christian student.
