The winners of the British Psychological Society’s Book Award - TopicsExpress

The winners of the British Psychological Society’s Book Award for 2014 have been announced. The winning book in the ‘Textbook’ category is Psychology, Mental Health and Distress by John Cromby, David Harper and Paula Reavey, which is published by Palgrave MacMillan. A reviewer in our monthly magazine The Psychologist said of it: “The easy read and engaging style, the vast range of references and up-to-date material mean this book would be a great addition to course reading lists.” In the ‘Popular science’ category, the winner is The Optimism Bias – Why we’re Wired to Look on the Bright Side by Tali Sharot. This is described by its publisher by Constable & Robinson as taking “an in-depth, clarifying look at how the brain generates hope and what happens when it fails; how the brains of optimists and pessimists differ; why we are terrible at predicting what will make us happy; how anticipation and dread affect us; and how our optimistic illusions affect our financial, professional, and emotional decisions”. Look out for interviews with the winning authors in a future issue of The Psychologist. buzz.mw/bgjb4_n
